Description

The AWQFBLS (Female Locking Sleeve) and AWQMLS (Male Locking Sleeve) are mandatory retention accessories for all AWQ Split-Type Underwater Connectors. These precision-machined POM or Stainless Steel sleeves slide over the mated AWQ connector pair and lock the coupling nut against accidental rotation — preventing de-mating under umbilical tension, sea-state vibration, or ROV cable-tray snagging. Never deploy an AWQ connector without its locking sleeve. Compatible with all AWQ-4/24, AWQ-8/32, and AWQ-7/42 series connectors.

At a glance: Compatible with all AWQ split-type series | POM or SS material | Snap-lock engagement | Female (AWQFBLS) and Male (AWQMLS) variants | Sold individually or as matched pairs

Key Design Features

  • Mandatory Safety Retention: AWQ locking sleeves prevent accidental connector de-mating under all operational conditions — ROV tether pull, current loading, or vibration.
  • Female (AWQFBLS) and Male (AWQMLS) Variants: Each mating pair requires one AWQFBLS and one AWQMLS — ordered as matched pairs or individually as spares.
  • Universal AWQ Compatibility: Fits AWQ-4/24, AWQ-8/32, and AWQ-7/42 series connectors without modification.
  • POM or Stainless Steel Options: POM (polyoxymethylene) for standard deepwater service; 316 SS for abrasion-heavy ROV tool-change environments.
  • Snap-Lock Engagement: One-handed installation in gloves or ROV manipulators; audible click confirms correct engagement.
  • Rated to 600 Bar Depth: Sleeve material and dimensions maintain engagement force at full AWQ connector rated depth (6,000 m).
  • Colour-Coded Options Available: Request colour-coded sleeves for multi-circuit umbilical identification (red/yellow/blue/black).
  • Replaceable Spare Parts: Sleeves are consumable items subject to wear — always carry spares on ROV operations.
  • RV Power Group OEM Quality: Manufactured to the same tolerances as the AWQ connector body — guaranteed fit without field modification.

Why Locking Sleeves Are Non-Negotiable

The Primary Cause of Subsea Connector Failure

Industry data consistently shows that accidental connector de-mating — not mechanical failure of the connector body — is the leading cause of subsea electrical faults during ROV operations. The AWQFBLS/AWQMLS locking sleeves eliminate this failure mode at minimal cost.

One-Handed ROV Manipulator Installation

The snap-lock design allows ROV manipulators to install and remove sleeves without requiring two-arm coordination — reducing hot-stab connection time and tooling complexity.

Low Cost, High Consequence

A locking sleeve costs a fraction of a subsea intervention day-rate. Every AWQ connector should have its sleeve installed before deployment — no exceptions, no shortcuts.

Universal Fit Across the AWQ Range

One sleeve design fits all three AWQ configurations (4/24, 8/32, 7/42), simplifying spare parts inventory management on ROV support vessels.

OEM Tolerance Guarantee

AWQFBLS/AWQMLS are manufactured to the same precision tolerances as the AWQ connector body — a critical assurance given that third-party locking sleeves often have loose fits that provide false confidence without real retention force.

How to Select Your AWQ Split-Type Connector

Criterion Guidance
Contact count AWQ-4/24: 28 total (compact); AWQ-8/32: 40 total (medium); AWQ-7/42: 49 total (high-density)
Power vs. signal balance AWQ-4/24 suited for low-power systems with many signals; AWQ-7/42 for high-signal density; AWQ-8/32 for balanced systems
Connector type MP (male plug) for cable side; S-BC (split bulkhead) for panel/chassis; MP-D (dummy) for protection when unmated
Locking sleeves Always order AWQFBLS + AWQMLS matched pair with every MP + S-BC pair — mandatory for deployment
Body material Standard: 316 SS shell; titanium shell on request for lightweight systems
Custom requirements Non-standard pin configurations, body materials, and pressure test certificates:

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does "split-type" mean?

A: The AWQ connector body is manufactured in two halves that separate along a longitudinal split line. This allows the connector to be installed around an existing cable bundle — you do not need to thread the cable through the connector body. Essential for field installation and repair of in-service umbilicals.

Q: How many contacts does the AWQ-4/24 have?

A: The locking sleeve is an accessory — it has no contacts. It is compatible with all AWQ-4/24, AWQ-8/32, and AWQ-7/42 connectors.

Q: What is the rated depth and mated pressure?

A: 600 Bar (8,700 psi) mated (6,000 m depth equivalent). Open-face rating is 400 Bar (5,800 psi).

Q: Is a locking sleeve required?

A: Yes — mandatory. Never deploy an AWQ connector without the AWQFBLS (female) and AWQMLS (male) locking sleeves installed. Locking sleeves are listed separately in our catalogue.

Q: Can power and signal circuits be mixed in the same connector?

A: Yes — this is the primary design advantage of the AWQ series. Power (600 V / 10 A) and signal (250 V / 5 A) contacts are segregated within the body to prevent crosstalk. Do not exceed the individual contact ratings.

Q: What is the difference between MP and S-BC?

A: AWQ-MP (Male Plug) is the cable-side in-line plug. AWQ-S-BC (Split Bulkhead Connector) is the panel-mounted fixed half. They mate together — one MP plugs into one S-BC.

Q: How many wet-mate cycles are rated?

A: >500 wet-mate cycles. Inspect and clean contacts every 50 cycles or annually.

Q: Are matched MP + S-BC + dummy plug + locking sleeve sets available?

A: Yes — contact  for complete system sets with matched components and optional factory-terminated cable assemblies.

Q: Can you supply custom AWQ configurations?

A: Yes — non-standard power/signal contact ratios, shell materials (titanium), and pressure test certificates are available on request. Specify your wiring requirements and operating conditions for a quotation.

Q: Are pressure test certificates available?

A: Yes — batch or per-unit hydrostatic pressure test certificates to 600 Bar are available for operator approval programmes.

Installation, Mating & Maintenance Guidelines

Split-Body Field Installation

(1) De-energise all circuits before connector installation. (2) Separate the AWQ body into its two halves along the split line using the body separation tool. (3) Lay the two halves around the cable bundle — do not bend or kink individual conductors during installation. (4) Terminate conductors to the correct numbered contacts per the wiring diagram; use a calibrated crimping tool for the contact crimp size specified. (5) Close the two body halves and secure all body fasteners to the specified torque. (6) Install the coupling nut and mate with the counterpart. (7) Install AWQFBLS/AWQMLS locking sleeves — mandatory before deployment.

Mating Procedure

(1) Inspect all contacts and O-rings. (2) Apply silicone grease to O-rings only — not to contact faces. (3) Align guide pin with guide socket and insert with a single smooth stroke. (4) Thread coupling nut finger-tight then to specified torque. (5) Install locking sleeve until positive click confirms engagement. (6) Conduct insulation resistance test (≥200 MΩ at 500 V DC) before energising. (7) Log the mating cycle number against the connector serial number.

Storage & Maintenance

Rinse with fresh water after seawater exposure. Store with dummy plugs installed and locking sleeves disengaged. Inspect split-body seam integrity annually — replace if cracking or water ingress is detected. Replace O-rings every 2–3 years or if compressed permanently. Replace contacts showing pitting or contact resistance above 0.05 Ω. Return to RV Power Group for factory split-body re-sealing if body seam integrity is questionable.
